The films in blue we saw in the theater, and the one in red was for US History through Film.
There is never a particular theme, just the choice of the person whose turn it is. However, Smokey and the Bandit was picked by David shortly after Burt Reynolds died, The Little Mermaid was to give Phoebe some background knowledge before she dances in her studio's production, and Love, Actually, was for a holiday movie watch-along that Phoebe organized on Ravelry.
