This may or may not be news--we moved to Virginia on 8 September. David is now the Director of Undergraduate Research at Christopher Newport University--he started on the 14th. I said "sort of" in the title because we can't yet move into our new house, so we are living in Virginia, but not officially yet.
Moving disrupted homeschooling a bit, but Phoebe is back in her groove and pretty much caught up and back on schedule.
I outlined her classes in the last post, so here is an update:
History: The book we are using (The History of the Ancient World, by Susan Wise Bauer) is chronological, not geographic, so it has covered the early histories of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and India so far. Phoebe likes that the chapters are short; I like that the content seems fairly comprehensive.
Literature: We started with some general mythology, looking at Creation, Flood, Afterlife, and Apocalypse myths from various cultures. Once we got to the relevant chapter in History, she started reading The Epic of Gilgamesh, which she is almost done with. Then, we are going back to mythology with the intent on prepping for the National Mythology Exam in February.
Meteorology: Our book is
The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology, by Lutgens, Tarbuck, and Tasa. So far, the book has covered basic stuff--the layers of the atmosphere, wind patterns, clouds--laying the groundwork for the later, more specific chapters.
Geography: Our book is Globalization
and Diversity: Geography of a Changing World, by Rowntree, Lewis, Price, and Wyckoff.
The first two chapters again were foundation building, and they overlapped a lot with Meteorology, which was nice. Then she looked at the USA and Canada, and her current chapter is on Latin America. The book is a blend of physical, human, and environmental geography, which makes for a nice overview. Phoebe also has a geography coloring book that she uses to help study.
French and Geometry are online classes, so we have no actual books for those.
Even though Virginia doesn't require them, I will probably still write the quarterly reports for my own records, so I will post them here when I have them!
