Phoebe turns eight today, and she got a gift bag full of books and other goodies, which made her very happy. There are other things planned, but she doesn't know about those yet! The festivities will culminate in her party Saturday, which will feature pizza and a showing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on a (relatively) big screen in the Sage Library.
She's been ambitious about her reading lately. She did finish Ice Wreck, which is about the Shakleton expedition to Antarctica in the early 1900s. His ship, the Endurance, was trapped in the ice, and the crew had to try to save themselves by crossing the ice. She was happy when all the human crew were rescued, but she was sad when the sled dogs had to be killed because there wasn't enough food. I'll have to see if the Branagh film is OK for her--would be interesting to see a visual adaptation as well.
She also read Thea Stilton and the Secret City, in which the Thea Sisters journey to the Incan city of Machu Picchu. She likes history and archaeology from her Egypt studies, and we've been watching The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on some of our movie nights to help that out. She probably not old enough yet for Raiders of the Lost Ark, but soon!
The other day she finished Hound at the Hospital, which is another in the Animal Ark series. The main character is Mandy Hope, who plans to follow in her parents' footsteps and be a veterinarian one day. In this one, Mandy gets to visit an animal hospital in London (we didn't realize before that the series was set in England) and helps out when a dog gets hit by a motorcycle.
Lastly, we finally finished The Titan's Curse last night! Phoebe's favorite part was any section featuring Blackjack the Pegasus. I think she's fond of him mainly because of the silly voice I use for him. So now her Barnes and Noble sheet is full, and she will be able to trade that in for a free book!
We are between books at the moment--not sure what she will pick to read next herself or to have us read together. I will keep you posted!
