Rick Riordan--Live!

Good morning everyone--

Phoebe had her second author encounter last week when we went back to Manchester to meet Rick Riordan (pronounced Rye-or-dan), author of the Percy Jackson series. He was there to debut the new book in his Kane Chronicles, which incorporates Egyptian myth instead of Greek. It was a much bigger group of people this time--they held it in a school auditorium instead of the store. It was a little more scripted and controlled--while he did answer questions, he didn't read or pose for pictures. I thought Erin Hunter better, but Phoebe had fun! David did get some pictures, and I believe they are up on Facebook.

In other news, last night we finished The World According to Humphrey, which is about a very smart classroom hamster who helps out all his humans in unusual ways. Phoebe's favorite part, although there were several sections she seemed to enjoy, was when Sayeh, who never talked in class because she felt people would make fun of her accent, raised her hand and finally spoke--after some quality time with Humphrey, of course!

On her own, Phoebe finished The Secret of Shadow Ranch, The Temple of the Ruby of Fire, and The Mona Mousa Code. The last two are from the Geronimo Stilton series. She gives a book report after each one. I quiz her on what happened, and she's doing OK--even if sometimes she misses the big points and remembers the trivial ones! But Borders released their kids' summer reading promotion today, and Barnes and Noble will be starting theirs soon, too, so those will keep her going. This year, I think the books we read together won't count!

Have a good weekend--field trip tomorrow to see baby animals and Sage graduation Saturday (different kind of animals!)
