Phoebe's Book Grop: The Results Show

Believe it or not, there was actually book discussion at the inaugural meeting of Phoebe's book group. I'd say, when it was all put together, they did a solid hour of discussing, which is pretty impressive for a bunch of third and fourth graders. They also had some pretty insightful comments. They really did think about the text. It helps that they are all huge Harry Potter fans!

In addition to discussion, we had an Herbology class where they planted seeds to grow magical herbs--or at least regular herbs which are supposed to have magical properties. And there was a snack, Harry Potter word puzzles, and play time. Here is a picture of Jack, the lone boy, getting Stupified by all the girls--

I am not sure why Eesha brought a gavel, but there you are!

At the end of it all, the kids decided they wanted to do it again. Each kid suggested a book, and the titles were put into a hat, and one was drawn out. So we are meeting at the end of this month to talk about Grimm Legacy, which Phoebe has read before, but she is going over it again in preparation.

I also got the author of the book, Polly Shulman, to Skype with the kids during their meeting, so that should be fun. This time, we are also having the group meet at MOSS Books, the campus bookstore for Sage. They aren't open on the weekends, but this meeting is going to be on a Friday that the kids have off from school, so it works out nicely.

We are about two-thirds of the way through The Red Pyramid, so we should, hopefully, be able to finish that soon. I have more or less promised Phoebe that we will read the fifth Harry Potter, The Order of the Phoenix, when we are done, so that should motivate her!

Before she went back to reread Grimm Legacy, Phoebe was working on Fire and Ice, the second Warriors book. It has been a long time since she read the first one, but she seems to be getting back into it. Before that, she read 13 Treasures, which is one of the books she saw at the school book fair this year.
