Every year, the Arts Center of the Capital Region has a Fence Show, where members can display up to three pieces of their own art. It is a juried show, and some pieces are chosen to be part of the Fence Select. This year, Phoebe decided to enter the student show, which is open anyone from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Anyway, out of 555 pieces, 50 adult and 20 student pieces were chosen for the Fence Select, and one of Phoebe's was among them! The selected piece is an oil pastel she did called Spring Flowers. Below is an older picture of it--it was all framed when we took it to the show! All the pieces she submitted were done at Arts Center camps, so she is learning from them!
So that was exciting. And now that it is summer, or almost summer, Phoebe is all excited about her summer reading. Last year, the Barnes and Noble contest was rather weak in their free book choices, so we were afraid Phoebe had outgrown it--based on her reading level, not her age. But there are at least two books she wants this year, so she is planning her reading--shorter books so she can fill the form out quickly!
She already has two of the eight books she needs to fill her first sheet: Magic and Other Misdemeanors (Sisters Grimm #5) and The White Giraffe, about a girl who goes to live on a game preserve in South Africa and discovers she has a gift for healing animals. The perfect book for a future vet/shelter owner!
Now she is reading Nim's Island. We saw the movie a long time ago, but she probably doesn't remember!
We are still working on The Red Pyramid, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix waiting in the wings. That will likely take us the entire summer--as long as camp doesn't tire her out too much!
Friday is the second meeting of the Harry Potter and Friends book club, and all the kids are ready to go!
