We reached the end of The Mysterious Benedict Society the other evening, and all turned out well for our child secret agents. Phoebe enjoyed the puzzles and the suspense--and the fact that the girls in the group were just as savvy as the boys. She was also happy that everyone found a family at the end. There are more books, though, so the happy ending is only temporary!
We have moved on to Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke, but we have only read the first chapter so far. But it is about a girl who loves books, so it shouldn't be too much of an imaginative leap for Phoebe!
Phoebe has finished the third Sisters Grimm book, The Problem Child, on her own, and the cliffhanger ending has her clamoring for #4! Maybe the Solstice Fairy will drop it off. She also read the first Alex Rider book, Stormbreaker. Alex is a teenage version of James Bond, and there are lots of books about his adventures as well. If Phoebe only reads the series she has started, and adds nothing new, I don't think she will run out of reading material until high school!
Right now, Phoebe is reading The Phantom Tollbooth, but I think she is almost done. She also squeezed in another Nancy Drew, The Bungalow Mystery.
While Phoebe doesn't watch much TV--there just isn't that much room in her schedule--she does like The Amazing Race, and the latest installment just wrapped. It is pretty much the only reality show David and I watch, and we thought she would enjoy the various locales and challenges--and we were right! Apparently there are a couple of other kids at school who watch it, so they conferenced on their favorite teams. Most of the other things she watches are old shows like Emergency! and things I find for her on Netflix, like her current fave Dark Oracle. She also is a fan of Ellen DeGeneres's talk show when she is home to catch it. She only gets about an hour and a half a day of TV (slightly more on the weekends), so she needs to choose wisely!
Phoebe has been asked to play an extra part in the Emma Willard holiday play, Revels. In addition to being one of the Children of the Manor, she will also be playing the role of Sprite and riding in on the Yule Log at the end of the play. They needed someone small, and Phoebe is that! She went up yesterday for her costume fitting.
Saturday we are off to New York City to see the Harry Potter exhibit at Discovery Times Square. We finally told Phoebe about it earlier this week, and she is excited (to say the least). I also told her she could wear her Hermione robes--just not the wig--which made her even happier. Now I just need to decide which vegan restaurant we will be patronizing! And hopefully there will be time to squeeze in a trip to a yarn store or two!
