A Visit to the Potter-verse

Saturday we went to see the Harry Potter exhibition at Discovery Times Square, and it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, pictures are strictly forbidden, so I have none to share. And unless you know a little about HP, much of this won't make too much sense!

The first stop, after being photographed for Homeland Security and a later retail opportunity, was the entryway, where volunteers were Sorted into various Houses. I gave Phoebe a nudge to make sure she volunteered, and she was the first to go. Despite being all decked out in her Gryffindor robes, the Sorting Hat first placed her in Slytherin, which, interestingly, is her House on Pottermore, an online Harry Potter game/experience. But then the Hat thought some more and placed her in Gryffindor.

The tour is directed--you pretty much have to follow a designated path, but there was all sorts of stuff to see. Phoebe was most excited about anything Hermione, and there were quite a few outfits and props that she used in the movies--including her Yule Ball dress that she wants to wear for Halloween next year--will have to work on changing her mind about that one, because I can't make that!

Many of the portraits from Hogwarts were there, even some of the "living" ones. There was some furniture, Quidditch equipment, sweets from Hogsmeade, the Tri-Wizard cup, lots of costumes, full-size models of some of the creatures from the Forbidden Forest, the front half of Buckbeak, and even the Angel of Death statue from the graveyard scene from Goblet of Fire.

Since it is meant to be kid-friendly, there were some interactive things. Phoebe got to pull out a mandrake, complete with screeching (but no earmuffs), sit in Hagrid's chair, and throw Quaffles through the goal hoops.

She wasn't as excited to go through the room devoted to the villains, so we didn't spend too long with the Death-Eaters and Dementors. But she did get to see Dobby toward the end, so that made up for it. There were things from all eight films, but they did seem to emphasize the earlier ones, which was good for Phoebe--not too much we haven't seen/read about yet.

We did a little walking before the show. Santa-con was going on, so there were Santas in various shapes, sizes, and genders all over midtown. We also saw elves, a couple of trees, and a troop of penguins. Crazy. But we got falafel at Maoz Vegetarian, and I got some yarn, so it was a pretty full day! Maoz is a great little place if you have one near you. Nowhere to sit, but great falafel--and it is now gluten-free! Yum!
