2018 Movies, Part 1

We are a little more than halfway through the year (eep!), so it is time to report on our first batch of movies. As most of you know, we watch a movie almost every Saturday night, plus there were a lot of movies tied to school this year.

Popular culture is an important part of education, which is why I make such a point of it. TV shows and movies have become a vital part of the American lexicon, for good or ill, and being able to speak the language--and to understand it--is something that well-rounded people should be able to do. References suffuse other shows as well, from "May the Force be With You" being spoken on The Handmaid's Tale to "Muggle" being used on The Big Bang Theory. Of course the plot can be understood without knowing that the first comes from Star Wars and the second from Harry Potter, but having that knowledge gives a new level of meaning.

So, here are the films we have watched so far this year--

My Darling Clementine (Henry Fonda, 1946)
The Circle (Emma Watson, 2017)
Star Trek: Beyond
Passengers (Jennifer Lawrence, 2016)
Looking for Richard
Gone in Sixty Seconds (Nicolas Cage, 2000)

We rotate the choices, so you can maybe figure out which of us chose which film! The movies in blue we saw in the theater, and the ones in red were for Phoebe's World History through Film class, which I have mentioned before.

We are also catching up on some older TV (new to Phoebe). We have finished Season 5 of The X-Files, the final Season of Castle, and Season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow. We are in process with Season 5 of Arrow, Season 1 of Star Trek: Next Generation, Season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 of iZombie, Season 4 of Doctor Who, and Season 5 of Downton Abbey.
