Happy New Year!

Since my posts about Phoebe have gone beyond simply what she is reading, I decided to rename her blog Phoebe's World. As she gets more tech savvy, I may even have her start writing some of the posts herself!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. It was the first school vacation Phoebe didn't go to camp, and the weather was so nasty and cold for so much of it that we did a lot of staying at home! But that was OK. On the 24th and 25th of December, we had our second annual Harry Potter movie marathon, and this year we added the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The plan is to read the sixth book later this year.

Cold weather is great for movie watching, and we watched quite a few! Phoebe is studying the Civil War in school, so we watched Gone with the Wind--and she was glued to it for the entire four hours! We also watched the original Secret Life of Walter Mitty, with Danny Kaye, and finally introduced Phoebe to Raiders of the Lost Ark. She had watched some of the TV series Young Indiana Jones on Netflix, but this was her first time with the adult Indy! She hid her face during the climactic face-melting scene, and we did warn her about it in advance. Honestly, I don't think she believed me until the Nazis really did start to turn to goo.

Phoebe got the third season of The Bionic Woman on DVD for "saving" the Thanksgiving turkey, so we watched a few episodes of that, and she was also introduced to Charmed. She was hooked right away, partly because she is named after one of the characters, I imagine, but she also seemed to really enjoy the show.

In school, Phoebe and her friend Eesha did a presentation on women in the Civil War before the winter break, where they talked about how women were soldiers and spies as well as nurses. Right now she is reading about Amelia Earhart because she has decided to be her for the 5/6 class's Wax Museum later this year. We found out yesterday that Phoebe took the top prize in her class for this year's Stock Market Game. Her class has also started a section on public speaking. Lots going on at school!

In the book department, we finished the second book in the Warriors series, Fire and Ice. Now we are reading the second book in the Kane Chronicles, The Throne of Fire. The plan is to finish with enough time to read Warriors #3 before moving on to the 6th Harry Potter book this summer.

Phoebe's book group just met to discuss Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Eesha picked the next book, the first from A Series of Unfortunate Events. Phoebe has also read The Emerald Atlas, The Adventures of Hotsy Totsy, and is currently reading Fablehaven.

OK, it is clearly taking me too long to get this blog post finished! Phoebe has now finished Fablehaven and is now reading The Wells Bequest, which will be the final book she needs to fill up her Winter Reading form for the bank. Twice a year, they give their student bankers up to $15 for reading books. Pretty sweet deal!

Over the most recent long weekend, we watched some more Charmed and Grease. Phoebe got to go swimming at the Y with her friend Mercedes, so that was also fun for her. Now I am going to post this before any more happens!
