What's New and World Book Night

First of all, I wanted to pass along the link to a really cool idea--World Book Night. It is April 23rd, and you can sign up to distribute copies of a book to light or non-readers. It was started in the UK, and I think this may the first time it is here, but I love the concept and think everyone should sign up! They just extended the deadline to Feb. 6th, so there is still plenty of time. David had his student group sign up, I applied as an individual, and Phoebe's teacher applied for her class.

Onward! We did indeed polish off Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on Saturday--right before Phoebe had to go to a birthday party! That let us watch the movie that evening. There was a lot more compression and moving things around in this film, but it was also a more complex story, so I guess that is to be expected. Phoebe said her favorite parts were when Hermione got her familiar--a cat named Crookshanks--and then when Ron got a new familiar at the end--a tiny but plucky owl that is yet unnamed. Turns out Ron's former animal companion--a rat named Scabbers--was not really a rat at all, but a wizard named Peter Pettigrew who had been living in rat form to avoid facing the fact that he was instrumental in the deaths of Harry's parents and the framing of his supposed best friend for it.

Phoebe wanted to go right to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but I told her we needed a bit of a Hogwarts break--and I need to check a summary and see if she's ready for it!--so instead we are reading Secrets of the Crown, the second book in the Familiars series. We aren't too far into it yet, but the evil rabbit Paksahara has just stripped all human wizards of their magic. Aldwyn and Co. to the rescue!

No new lunch this week--there are still breadsticks, corn muffins, and black-eyed peas on hand. But today was Phoebe's special vegan school lunch, so we will see how that went!
